Sustainable Oxy works to make Occidental College a more environmentally sustainable place. UEPI  partners with students, faculty, staff, and administrators, community organizations and other colleges to promote green transportation, local and sustainable food, energy efficiency and renewable energy, reduced water use and waste reduction at Oxy.

Highlights include:

  • The college is constructing a 1 mW solar array that will reduce Occidental’s greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 1,250 metric tons of carbon dioxide every year—akin to removing 250 automobiles from the road.
  • A student run garden run by the FEAST club has raised beds for organic vegetable production, large scale composting using food scraps from the cafeteria, chickens for eggs, a solar shed, and space for meetings and socializing.
  • A student-run bike share programs lets students check out bikes for short term and long term use and includes a bike repair space where students can tune up their bikes.
  • Many student-initiated sustainability projects are funded by the ASOC Renewable Energy & Sustainability Fund, with contributions from all students at Occidental.
  • The UEP department offers an environmental stewardship class whose students have researched, initiated and supported many of these projects.
  • Campus dining composts almost all waste generated in the cafeteria and operates a reusable to-go container program to reduce plastic waste.
  • Zipcars are based on campus to encourage students to not bring cars and staff and faculty to not commute by car.

More still needs to be done by the college and its constituencies to promote green transportation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use, and waste generation.
